Memphis Tiger basketball fans will not be going to Memphis Madness this year. The typical opening event of the Tigers' basketball season will not happen at all.

Every year, thousands of fans pack FedExForum to see the first official practice, get player autographs, and enjoy special concerts.

"I remember the first one I saw Derrick Rose do an amazing dunk," U of M fan Tyrell Hayslett recalled.

But, that won't be the case in 2015.

Memphis Tigers head basketball coach Josh Pastner said Memphis Madness will be replaced with a fan appreciation day, which will be free for everyone. It will be similar to the fan appreciation event the school hosts for the football team.

"It's going to be a situation where, obviously, people from the community can come in to a free event, get autographs and be engaged with our student athletes, our coaching staff," said Mark Alnutt, University of Memphis.

Fans posting to social media sites seem to think they will get less, but U of M officials say fans could appreciate the new event even more when basketball season rolls around.

"Nothing's being taken away. The only aspect of the Memphis Madness being taken away is that entertainment," Alnutt said.

The fan appreciation day will also include women's basketball, and they hope to host similar events to include soccer and volleyball.
