A Memphis man is behind bars after he allegedly drove into a neighbor’s house while he was intoxicated, killing the neighbor’s cat.

Police say 29 year old Derrick Fifer was driving his girlfriend’s car back to her house on Amberly Village Drive when he lost control and ended up driving into a neighbor’s house.

"I had no idea it was in my bedroom," said Ellen Nolan.

Nolan said she was sitting inside her home when she heard a loud noise, and when she went outside to investigate, she found a car through her front bedroom.

"The car was smoking and I told him 'You might want to get out of the car,' and when he did, he got out with the beer," said Nolan.

Police say they found a beer can at the scene and Fifer smelled of alcohol.

Nolan later found out her family cat was injured during the wreck.

"When we looked at him, we realized he was bleeding from the mouth and his nose," said Nolan.

She said when she took the cat to the vet, she was forced to put the cat down because of his injuries.

Nolan says this is the third wreck on her street in less than 6 years. Despite Fifer being drunk, she thinks her home is in a dangerous location and is thankful this wreck wasn't worse.

"You don't want anything to happen to your animal, but if it was your child I can't imagine," said Nolan.

Fifer was arrested and is being charged with driving under the influence, no driver’s license, reckless driving, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
