Investigators are trying to piece together how Susan Overton ended up driving the wrong way on Interstate 55 in Desoto County near the Coldwater exit.

They were involved in the first of three crashes on the same 1 mile stretch of I-55 on Thursday.

Overton and her 9-year-old daughter Georgia were traveling northbound in the southbound lane. Their car crashed head on into a UPS tractor trailer.

Both vehicles burst into flames.

The uninjured UPS driver got out and tried to save the 9-year-old.

Susan Overton is from Jonesboro, Arkansas. Her family members said they have no idea why she was in DeSoto County or why she was driving at 4:30 in the morning.

They said Overton planned to visit her mother Wednesday night in a Jonesboro assisted living facility.

Thursday, Overton planned to fly to Denver with her daughter where Georgia’s father lives.

Overton is divorced. She pleaded guilty to DUI in 2011.

Thursday's crash is under investigation.
