The mother behind the wheel of a fatal crash on Interstate 55 in DeSoto County has a history of Driving Under the Influence.

Susan Overton and her passenger, her 9-year-old daughter, died when their car slammed head-on into a UPS truck.

Overton was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 55 at 4:30 Thursday morning.

"Prayers for both of them and their family and all those involved," Mason McCain said. "I can't imagine the tragedy."

Investigators have not determined why Overton was going the wrong way down the freeway. They are waiting on toxicology reports to see if Overton was impaired at the time of the crash.

April 2010, Shelby County deputies arrested and charged Overton with DUI.

Then in March and April 2015, Overton was arrested for DWI in Craighead County, Arkansas.

"You make the mistake once, maybe. You know there's some leeway there," McCain said. "But after a couple of times, especially even going state to state, yeah I think there should be some punishment."

A source close to the family also said Overton checked into a 45-day treatment program earlier this year, but withdrew before she completed the program.

Overton's first day in court was set for September 14th--just 3 weeks after she and her daughter died in the I-55 crash.
