OXFORD, MS (WMC) -

Two people who showed up at a house to buy drugs were robbed at gunpoint on Thursday night in Oxford.

The gunman got into the victims' car and demanded money from them. When he ordered them to drive to an ATM, they ended up at the Oxford Square, where they were able to run away. That's also where the armed robber left his gun behind in the street.

The Oxford Square is an area of town that is normally filled with families and college students. But on Friday, many people were, instead, looking over their shoulders.

"It makes me feel very unsafe especially as a young woman walking around the streets. We eat here. People go out here and shop here. We're here all the time, especially late at night," said Oxford resident Megan Krynen.

But those who were on the square on Thursday night do feel safer knowing Oxford Police Department sprung to action very quick.

"We heard some ruckus and some yelling and we walked down to the corner," said Maria Hawthorne.

"It happened so quick, but I've never seen four or five police men jump out of no where," agreed Bob Hawthorne.

Police say they are reviewing surveillance cameras in an attempt identify the robbery suspect.
