A Shelby County Sheriff's Office deputy arrested a 19-year-old Saturday for allegedly trying to bring a loaded gun into a high school football game.

According to an arrest report, a Whitehaven High School resource officer was assigned to the front entrance of the stadium Saturday to check people before they walked into the game.

The SRO said he found a loaded gun in one of Lonnell Mabry's pockets as he tried to enter the game. The deputy immediately took Mabry into custody.  Mabry tried to leave the scene while in custody, but he was not successful, according to the incident report.

“Something like that didn't even run across my mind about him,” said Mabry’s mother. “You just never know what kids do behind your back.”

She said she appreciates what Shelby County Schools is doing to keep everyone safe at football games.

SCS said they work closely with law enforcement to make sure students and fans are safe. For every game, they use metal detectors and have officers patrolling the area before, during and after games.

This is something parents said is necessary.

WMC Action News 5 asked Mabry’s mother what she will say to her son when he is released from jail.

“I might put a lock on his door and tell him don't go outside, period,” she said.

Mabry is currently in jail on bond of $5,000. He's charged with carrying a weapon onto school grounds.
