MILLINGTON, TN (WMC) -

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is on the hunt for thousands of dollars that went missing from Millington Police Department's property room.

TBI and Millington Police Department cannot talk about the case, but WMC Action News 5's Kontji Anthony spoke with a person who is working with investigators, as well as another source, who say it all began at Shady Oaks Trailer Park.

Sources say a man living at the mobile home park died of natural causes in April. Inside his home, police officers found stacks of cash.

The source who is working with investigators revealed that officers brought the cash to city hall, where it was counted up to equal $19,126.

The source says the city then took the money to Patriot Bank where it was counted again, wrapped up, and taken to Millington Police Department's property room.

When the brother of the man who died showed up with a probate court order to collect the money, the source said only $7,000 was left in the property room.

Only three people are believed to have had a key to the property room and one of those people has contacted a lawyer.

Mayor Terry Jones released the following statement on Tuesday:

"On August 20th this situation came to light. All proper authorities have been notified and the City of Millington is cooperating fully. This is an active investigation, therefore we have no further comment."

TBI said, "At the request of the District Attorney General on Friday, we began investigating information received about missing money that was being stored at the Millington Police Department."

According to TBI, the investigation is preliminary, so there is no additional information.

Millington's police chief had no comment.
