While many area students and parents are happy about the start of the school year, many teachers are worried about having enough classroom school supplies.

However, a Memphis teacher came up with a clever way to raise money for the supplies he needs for his classroom.

Last year, LaRose Elementary teacher Dominic Van Horn said he had to spend his own money for school supplies.

"Throughout the year I ended up spending my own money on things like paper, scissors, markers, glue etc.,” he said.

Before the beginning of this school year, Van Horn created a GoFundMe page to help raise money for school supplies.

"Lots of people shared it, supported it, donated," Van Horn said.

He said he raised more than $800. Shelby County School teachers only get $200 for supplies.

"We will have new crayons; we will have plenty of paper,” Van Horn said.

He said teachers all around the district are looking for ways to generate money for supplies.

"In general, you know we are a title one school,” he said. “Most of our families don't have a lot of resources themselves. Their budgets are limited, so it’s not fair to expect them to also make up for what we don't have in our art room."

Van Horn has also started an Amazon wishlist to make it easier for people to donate supplies.

He said he hopes there is another solution to the problem, but for now, all some teachers can rely on is donors to help out.
