MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis drivers are ready for some traffic relief.

The new I-40 eastbound flyover opened Saturday afternoon. TDOT officials confirmed the opening on Twitter.

Though the construction is supposed to improve safety, but drivers still have their concerns.

"It looks kind of scary, but I've been to other cities that have flyovers," said driver Johnny Renfrow. "It's kinda scary when you start realizing that you're up high."

The highest point in the flyover is 95 feet off the ground.  That makes it the tallest in the state.

Roads nearby will also accommodate the change.

"A lot of people who normally travel from around Walnut Grove, Summer Avenue and Sam Cooper, you know the lanes are narrow, so they will widen those and then make those ramps," said WMC Action News 5 traffic anchor Janeen Gordon.

TDOT officials said the $109 million project will be done by July 2017.

TDOT has another change planned for this weekend as well.

"Sunday afternoon we're going to be opening up an additional ramp lane from 240 east to 40 east. Right now, it's a single lane. We're going to be opening that additional lane and it will now be two lanes."

You'd think 28 wins over the last three years would enough for a program to feel pretty good about itself going into a new college football season, especially for a program that had trouble just sniffing any victories a few season ago.
