MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Residents in Frayser saw how their hard work paid off in helping rid the streets of gangs.

Saturday, the new Denver Park held a reopening in a place that was once overrun by crime.

Children were so happy about the renovations, they marched down the street in a parade to celebrate.

"Hey its good for the community to get together and have something this big and nice and they done upgraded the park. I love it," said Donald Ward.

Residents said it was only months ago that gangs ruled over Denver Park.

"I thank God for changing everything around because this park was a bad park back then," Gloria Ward said.

Neighbors said back then, there was not much available for kids to do in the park. Now, there is new playground equipment, a walking trail and new basketball courts.

Also at the park Saturday, Memphis police officers teamed up with several area organizations to give away books and bikes to those who participated in a bike safety program.

The course also taught youngsters about peer pressure and conflict resolution.

For many, renovating Denver Park is the first step to taking back the neighborhood.
