Ron Childers: Saying so long to a longtime friend

Dave Brown has always been there for us Dave Brown has always been there for us
(WMC) -

Monday is Dave Brown Day in Memphis and Shelby County. It is also Dave's last day at WMC Action News 5.

At 6 p.m., Dave will do his final weathercast and retire after an illustrious television career that spans back into the 70s.

It's difficult to imagine a day without Dave on TV.

I grew up watching him on "Dialing For Dollars," "Saturday morning wrestling," doing the weather on channel 13 and 5, and "Countdown on Beale." It seemed as if he was always there on TV.

For the past 25 years, he's been there for me in person as well. In 1989, he plucked me from my job in radio at FM 100 to become a part-time weatherman at channel 5. He gave me an opportunity that forever changed my life. He helped me to grow and learn as a meteorologist and a broadcaster.

He has been there to advise me professionally and personally. He has been there to stand by my side when I lost my father and, again, when I lost my mother.

He has been there every afternoon to talk weather or to laugh and share a story. It's as if he has always been there.

Dave, I want you to know how happy I am for you as you retire, but also know how strange it will be when I look around the office Tuesday evening and you're not there. Congratulations, my friend, on an amazing career and may you enjoy this new chapter of your life.

Thank you for always being there.
