MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis firefighters started trying to put out a large fire around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire started at a mulch plant in the 4900 block of Hickory Hill Road. It took several hours for firefighters to bring the fire under control.

Firefighters blocked off several lanes heading southbound on Hickory Hill Road for several hours.

Firefighters at the fire said this business catches fire at least once every year. They said heat builds up in the mulch and eventually ignites.

MFD said it is prepared and well trained to put out this type of fire. MFD also said the lack of wind made fighting the fire even easier.

Firefighters said the mulch fire combined with a controlled burn in another part of the city sent smoke through Midtown around 9:30 a.m.
