Memphis celebrates 901 Day - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis celebrates 901 Day

September 1 means it is 901 Day in the Bluff City.

At the Cash Savers store, a steady stream of people celebrated by doing business at the Madison Growler and Bottle Shop inside.

"You can get beer from Memphis Made, Wiseacre, Hi Cotton, Ghost River and Bosco’s,” said Taylor James of the Madison Growler and Bottle Shop.

All day, Memphis-brewed beers were being sold inside a 64-ounce glass jug stamped with a 901 label that represents Memphis’ area code.

“I think it’s really actually cool to celebrate the city that you are from and it’s just really enjoying where you are,” said Emily Cummings.

That is the message behind 901 Day: Support your city, the people and the businesses in the 901 area code.

“I actually took the day off from work so I could celebrate chose 901 day,” Cummings said. “We're going to the Redbirds game tonight for it and everything.”

Speaking of the Memphis Redbirds, they are celebrating 901 Day with a Memphis icon.

Dave Brown was on hand to throw out the first pitch

That comes one day after he officially retired as Chief Meteorologist at WMC Action News 5.

In addition, Mid-Southerners are also encouraged to support downtown, the Levitt Shell, the University of Memphis, Memphis BBQ, the Grizzlies and other businesses and attractions.

“It brings jobs,” said Jeffery Cummings. “It brings tourists to help out the city all around.”

The annual celebration began four years ago. Supporters said they are going all out to build positive attitudes about Memphis one person at a time.

"It’s been turning positive recently, because of all the good things coming out, all of the revitalization of the city and the music industry, the food and beer industry; it’s been good,” Jeffery Cummings said. “I love living in this city.”
