WEST HELENA, AR (WMC) -

Arkansas State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Helena-West Helena.

The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Holly Street and McDonough Street.

Police were notified about people inside a gray Mazda and a maroon Pontiac firing shots at each other.

Officers followed the Mazda until the driver stopped and got out of his car holding an assault rifle.

When he turned towards the officers and raised his weapon, the officers shot the suspect multiple times.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in serious, but stable condition.

The officers suffered no injuries.

According to Helena-West Helena police Chief Virgil Green, the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Unit is investigating the shooting because it involved an officer. Per department policy, the officer is on paid administrative leave.

The shooting happened in a public housing development area near a school.  That school was placed on lockdown for a short time.
