It's the start of meteorological fall

Average Highs & Lows through the month of September Average Highs & Lows through the month of September
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Fall doesn't officially begin until September 23 at 3:21 AM, however, for meteorologists, fall begins September 1.

To better track seasonal weather and climatology, meteorologists observe seasons in three month increments.  So, September 1 until November 30 is considered the three months of autumn.  December 1 through February 28 or 29 in a leap year is considered meteorological winter,  Meteorological spring is March 1 through May 31 and meteorological summer is June 1 through August 31.

And that brings us to Tuesday and the start of fall for meteorologists.   Even though Tuesday didn't feel like a fall day, I wanted to put together some numbers to show the shift toward cooler temperatures through the month of September.

We start the month with an average high of 90  and low of 70 and we end the month with an average high of 80 and low of 59.  That's a significant cooling trend in one month's time.  We still have some heat to deal with through the Labor Day weekend but a cooler pattern should begin to evolve as the month progresses.
