MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Mayor Wharton wants to be clear concerning the investigation into allegations made against Robert Lipscomb.

"Mr. Lipscomb is presumed innocent until proven guilty," Wharton said.

Wharton's statement comes after Lipscomb's attorney, Ricky Wilkins, accused City Hall of leaking information to the press.

"I've not released any information," Wharton explained. "I made one statement. I will not touch on the evidence."

However, Wharton's press office did share details that the number of victims had begun to grow. He explained why he even mentioned this in the first place.

"The only reason I was in on the front end of this one is because a call came to me personally," Wharton said.

He further explained the protocol in a rare case like this investigation.

"If it's an alleged criminal matter, it goes straight to the police department. I don't jump into criminal matters."

Wharton said he was simply being transparent about why one of his top aides was being suspended without pay.

"I have to protect the welfare of the city and its agencies, and have to state at least why we're doing what we're doing," Wharton explained. "We're going to be very measured in that."
