LAFAYETTE COUNTY, MS (WMC) - A Mississippi mother isn't giving up without a fight.
She was forced to hand over the adopted baby she raised from birth.
"We had to give him back Wednesday," grandmother Edna Brown explained. Her daughter Cindy Stagner adopted Mason the day he was born 15 months ago.
She said, at the time, the child's biological mother told her she didn't know who the father was.
After months of living with Mason, Stagner got some terrifying news.
"The dad found out about the adoption and wanted to take immediate custody," Brown said.
Brown said that's when they hired lawyers and tried to fight the decision. Two weeks ago, her daughter was ordered to give Mason to his father.
"She stood up and looked at him and said, 'you asked me when I adopted this child what I would do if someone tried to take my child away from me and I told you then that I would fight with everything in me and that's what I'm doing. I refuse to answer you where he is,'" Brown said. "That's when she was arrested."
LaFayette County Sheriff's Office said Stagner was placed on a chancellor hold. She was ordered to stay in custody until investigators found the baby.
Brown said Stagner, once a happy mother, is now heartbroken after she spent two weeks in jail and handed Mason over to be taken to Florida.
"She's devastated. She's not handling it," Brown added. "She's strong and she will pull through it, but right now she just wants her son back."
They have filed an appeal with the Supreme Court.
Brown said, "We just have to be patient and continue to pray and hope our case is heard."
