At the Citadel of Deliverance Church in East Memphis, the congregation opened their hearts and wallets to give away clothes and other back-to-school items Sunday.

Following Sunday morning services, the congregation gave away enough items, including 600 pairs of shoes, to pack a U-Haul.

The giveaway was part of the church's annual Family and Friends Community Fest and Job Fair.

The giveaway was a mixture of worship and celebration. Ministers said a local organization called Communities in Schools provided them a list of students who needed help the most.

"I heard the word that several students were not able to attend classes or they're in a school suspension because they don't have school uniforms, and that put a great burden on my heart," Reverend Linwood Dillard said.

The church teamed up with a group of businesses and local agencies to also offer free haircuts, job screenings, free immunizations, vision testing and flu shots.

"This is a good event so the families can say, 'OK, we don't have to spend a lot of money,'" said parent Kelvanna Chambers. "So the church is actually helping out, so this is really a good thing for the community."

Students who showed up at the church called the giveaway 'Christmas in September."

In addition to free items, the children were treated to horseback rides, a petting zoo, games, rides, and music.
