This Labor Day, while businesses and schools were closed, restaurants stayed open to honor some well-deserving people in the Memphis community. The Olive Garden on Poplar served free meals to firefighters in the Memphis area Monday.

Manager Haytham Ajami said every year, Olive Garden delivers meals to local first responders on Labor Day to say thank you. Last year, they delivered meals to police stations and this year, it was firefighters. Ajami said this year’s delivery is an important one. He says his location has called the Mendenhall station for help before, and it’s nice knowing he can now thank and honor them.

“This is our way of honoring the men and women who help us each and every day,” he said.

Ajami further explained how these first responders have personally helped him to feel more at ease with his safety.

“It makes you feel safe that there is someone on the other end, that there is someone who will come out and be there for you when you’re in need,” he said.

Batallion Chief Will Shannon Jones admits firefighting is often a thankless job.

"These personnel are away from their families on this holiday. They do it willingly," he said.

However, he further explained that it’s moments like these that remind him of the many people they are helping when the bell rings and they answer a call every day.

"I feel very appreciative," he said.
