When you’re the head coach of a college football team that won its first game 63-7, it might be hard to find negatives.

For University of Memphis head coach Justin Fuente, it is easier than you might think.

All he has to do is look at the nine penalties for 92 yards that his team committed.

While mostly in the second half with the game out of reach, the flags included two personal foul penalties on one drive that led to Missouri State’s only touchdown.

The most costly penalty came against defensive end Ricky Hunter, who was flagged for targeting and was ejected. The penalty will cost him the first half of the Tigers next game at Kansas.

Fuente said that can be corrected.

“It’s very difficult to win close ballgames when you do things like that,” Fuente said. “We’re going to play in plenty of close ones.”

Another player will be suspended for the first half against Kansas Saturday. Linebacker Leonard Pegues will complete the suspensions from the Miami Beach Bowl brawl in December.
