Flying between Memphis and Phoenix just got a lot easier.

At a news conference Wednesday morning, Allegiant Airlines announced they will offer non-stop flights between Memphis and Phoenix. Those flights are set to begin in December.

"Memphis is one of our fastest growing markets, so it's just really a fantastic day for us here in Memphis," Allegiant Airlines representative Justin Ralenkotter said.

Since May, Allegiant has added six different direct flights into and out of Memphis. Those six, combined with flights from other carriers, bring the total number of non-stop flights added to Memphis's roster in 2015 to 10.

"All this goes into really getting the airport back to a much higher level of service," Mayor A C Wharton said. "There are businesses here where folks fly everyday in and out of Memphis."

Wharton applauded the new route, which will run twice a week, on Thursday and Sunday. Wharton said Allegiant's low airfares will be a hit with travelers flying to Memphis for events at Graceland and on Beale Street.

Wharton said Allegiant's new flight brings the number of discount direct flights out of Memphis to 40. He feels it's a good first step to making up for the loss of flights when Delta scaled its Memphis hub back.

"We didn't get in to this overnight, but by gradually building out of it, we'll get back to that critical mass of discount carriers and the legacy carriers and that's where we are heading," Wharton said.
