A man died after being shot during what may have been a robbery attempt.

It happened Wednesday night the 1200 block of Grand Avenue in Orange Mound.

Memphis Police said a woman told them her nephew shot a man, but she said he only did it because that man was trying to rob him.

Police would not officially say what their investigation revealed about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but they did confirm that the shooter admitted to pulling the trigger.

Neighbors tell us this all may have started with an argument over a game of dice.

"I've had enough of the shooting; I know that. It's just too much going on," neighbor Jackie Weeden said.

She walked outside Wednesday afternoon to a scene of cop cars, flashing blue lights, and police crime investigators. She also saw detectives carrying brown envelopes out of a home.

"It's just horrible," Weeden said. "It's not safe at all because anything can go wrong. And that could have been my child."

Police are actively working to determine if the shooting was justified.

"We do have a suspect in custody who has admitted to the shooting, and we are still investigating at this time to figure out what happened," police Major Venus Owens said.

No word on if any charges will be filed.
