MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A fight at Hamilton Middle School had to be broken up during lunch on Thursday.

According to Shelby County Schools, officers had to use pepper spray to break up the fight.

The Memphis Fire Department arrived on the scene to treat three students who were exposed to the pepper spray.  The rest of the student body was asked to leave the cafeteria.

One student said the fight started over a girl.

"Two boys had got to fighting over a girl and then the police came and pepper sprayed the boy in the face and he held it in the boy's face," Barbreannaa Johnson said. "The whole cafeteria had to go outside."

The students involved in the fight will be punished and their parents were notified.

Classes continued as normal Thursday afternoon, but some parents picked up their children early.
