5 GREAT THINGS: New flights, officers escort girl, Houston High golfer

Between breaking ground at a new school and enjoying the beautiful sunshine, here are the top 5 things that happened in the Mid-South this week.

1. Officers escort girl to father-daughter dance

A group of Memphis police officers gave one girl the fairy tale treatment. Jewel is the daughter of fallen officer Timothy Warren.

Six officers escorted Jewel to the father-daughter dance, taking her in a 1972 cutlass supreme.

Their story was shared almost 1700 times on Facebook.

2. New flights at Memphis International Airport

Allegiant Airlines announced a new non-stop flight out of the Memphis International Airport.

Starting December 17, you can fly straight to Phoenix for a reasonable price.

3. Houston High golfer

Houston High School freshman Jayna Choi is one of four teenage golfers chosen to represent the United States in the Evian Masters Junior Cup in France.

The tournament runs from September 14 to 16.

4. Westhaven groundbreaking

Shelby County Schools broke ground on a brand new Westhaven Elementary School this week.

The new campus will be ready for students in about a year.

5. Great weekend weather

Mother nature couldn't have picked a better weekend for such beautiful weather.

Between the Southern Heritage Classic, the Germantown Festival, the Delta Fair, and other great events, folks will flock from all over to bask in the beautiful temperatures.

Expects highs in the 70s with lots of sunshine!
