The could be more good news for the Mediterranean diet and those who follow it.

The diet, rich in olive oil, could have added benefits for women.

Researchers from Spain randomly assigned more than 4,000 women to the Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil, the Mediterranean diet with nuts, or a low-fat diet.

They found the women who consumed more olive oil had the most benefit, reducing their risk of malignant breast cancer by nearly a third.

It's unclear whether the apparent benefit may be from the olive oil itself, or its use within the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fruit, vegetables and legumes.
