Memphis Firefighters feeling the heat during budget cuts

Memphis firefighters are feeling the heat this morning following the city's latest round of budget cuts.

As a result of the cuts, the department says it's had to cut back on overtime spending.

This means some battalion chiefs are covering more than just one post.

The battalion chief is the officer in charge, who makes decisions about where to send firefighters to fight a blaze.

Firefighter Joe Norman says not having chiefs on the scene right away is dangerous.

"They're going to do it until somebody gets killed and then they're going to jerk their knees and try to come up with a different approach to it.", says Norman.

Fire officials tell Action News Five they have had no complaints and are watching the situation closely.

At the first sign that their plan is putting firefighters at risk, they say they will change it.
