MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Friends and family are remembering the life of an 11-year-old who was killed after falling from the trunk of a moving car.
Monday, a vigil was held for Treston Harris. Family and friends are still trying to make sense of the tragedy.
"He was a good boy. I couldn't ask for a better son," Charles Harris, Treston's father, said.
Family and friends are heartbroken after police said Harris fell off the back of a moving car.
Police said Harris, who was first a passenger in the car, somehow ended up getting out of the car and onto the trunk. The driver, who has been identified as 19-year-old Sanderius Smith, took off.
Police said that is when Harris fell off and later died.
"He was laying on the pavement. He was critically injured and it was nothing I could do," Charles Harris said.
Treston Harris was a student at Craigmont Middle School.
Now, his friends are grieving while the driver was only issued a misdemeanor citation for not having a driver's license or insurance.
Police said it is up to the attorney general's office if he will face additional charges, but police said it appears to have been an accident.
Harris' father said his son did not know the driver and believes he should face charges.
"He was cut short for someone being irresponsible as an adult," Charles said.
But for now, the Harris family is doing their best to stay positive.
"My little brother is going to live through me. Everything I do is going to make him happy," Diamond Harris said.
