MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A 12-year-old is in custody after his 15-year-old brother was stabbed to death.
Memphis police said the 12-year-old is responsible for stabbing and killing his brother.
The stabbing happened in Frayser on February 7. The victim's mother called police saying her son had been stabbed and was in her car.
"It's just unexpected," neighbor Stan Jenkins said. "I see the kids playing out here all the time."
However, Jenkins never thought a sibling fight between two brothers would lead to one brother being charged with killing the other.
"I can't explain it and I don't want to understand it," Jenkins said.
15-year-old Tony Mathena is now dead. He was a student at Craigmont High School and now his brother is in juvenile custody and charged with aggravated assault.
It is unknown what caused the deadly fight.
With this tragedy comes one obvious question: Will the 12-year-old will face adult charges?
On Tuesday, the 12-year-old suspect had a juvenile court hearing and remained in juvenile custody. He's been charged as a juvenile. Generally speaking, a transfer hearing takes place to decide if a child in juvenile court will face adult charges.
In the meantime, the family is grieving and asking for privacy. It's a tough time for the family as well as neighbors.
"Just average kids. I never thought something like that would happen with them," Jenkins said.
