Grizzlies center Marc Gasol is out indefinitely with a broken foot.
Gasol limped off the court during the Grizzlies’ loss to Portland on Monday.
The Grizzlies said Gasol could possibly miss the rest of the season. The organization released the following statement.
“This morning at Campbell Clinic, Marc underwent a thorough evaluation by team physicians. During the course of this evaluation, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a fracture in his right foot.
Marc is a cornerstone of our franchise, and we are focused on getting him healthy. Marc will be out indefinitely and a further update will be provided after the All-Star Break.”
The 31-year-old leads his team with 16.6 points per game for Memphis this season and is second on the team with 7 rebounds.
The big man signed a five year deal with Memphis this offseason after making the 2015 All-NBA First team.
Grizzlies guard Mike Conley talked about the possibility of losing Gasol after Monday's game against Portland.
"You have to lock us out, lock us out of the gym," said Conley. "And basically give us no other choice but to sit down. And when you do that and know your teammates have your back, know that we're going to support any decision, it makes it a little easier. But I can tell you it's tough, and I know it's gonna be tough for Marc if he has to sit out any games. So hopefully that's not the case and we can keep moving forward. It is what it is. I understand it's now my time to be a little more aggressive and look to shoot a little more, score a little more and see what happens. Marc does so much for us and we can't replace him. With him out, if he misses any games, we have to do it by committee and I have to start by being more aggressive."
