MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man was indicted on 17 felony charges after police said he shot at a team of officers.
According to Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich, 40-year-old Dennis Murphy was indicted on 17 felony charges, including attempted first-degree murder after shooting at the officers while they served a drug search warrant.
The incident happened just before midnight on May 28, 2015 at the Hillcrest Apartments on Raines Road. Officers knocked on Murphy's door and said who they were when someone inside the apartment fired two shots through the door.
One of the bullets hit officer Brian Scott in the chest, but he was protected by his safety vest.
Murphy and two other people barricaded themselves in the apartment for approximately four hours, refusing to talk to officers. When officers finally arrested the suspects, Murphy was named as the shooter.
Officers executing a search warrant at the apartment found guns, ammunition, marijuana and cocaine.
According to Weirich, Murphy also has a prior felony drug conviction.
The charges Murphy faces include attempted first-degree murder, six counts of aggravated assault and four counts of selling drugs near a day care center.
