MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent in the Christian liturgical calendar.
It's a season of personal sacrifice in the Christian faith leading up to Easter.
In order to celebrate Ash Wednesday, clergy from Calvary Episcopal Church walked downtown along Main Street to bless interested passers-by with cross-shaped ashes on their foreheads and prayer.
"If we can get out there and give that little reminder that this matters and that it really can be good for them and it can change their lives for the better, maybe that will be enough to nudge them into church or another faith community over the next few weeks in advance of Easter," rector Christopher Girata said.
This is the fifth year the church has held the "Ashes to Go" event.
