SACRAMENTO, CA (WMC) -

A tiger from the Memphis Zoo killed a tiger from the Sacramento Zoo.

Baha, a 15-year-old female tiger at the Sacramento Zoo, died Wednesday after suffering an attack from Mohan, a male tiger from the Memphis Zoo.

Mohan arrived at the Sacramento Zoo with the intent to mate with Baha in December 2015. The tigers physically met for the first time after zookeepers decided the timing was appropriate.

The Sacramento Zoo said they had been monitoring the tigers when they got into a physical altercation. Staff at the zoo was able to break up the altercation, but it was too late.

The zoo staff made efforts to save Baha, but were unable to save her.

The Memphis Zoo released a statement on the incident:

Mohan was a part of the Memphis zoo family from 2006-2015. We were saddened to hear of the tragic loss at the Sacramento Zoo. We extend our condolences to our colleagues.
