MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man visiting the Bluff City for the weekend, hoping for a career on the stage, found himself brutally attacked in Downtown Memphis.
Ricardo Lastrapes, 23, was in town for theater tryouts, but ended up in the hospital first.
He posted a picture on his Facebook page of injuries to his face after he was beaten up.
"It really came out of nowhere," Lastrapes said.
The Orlando aspiring actor found himself attacked near Beale Street on Sunday.
It happened during his walk back to his hotel room Sunday.
"He came up from behind and he just hit me really hard. He punched me," Lastrapes said.
According to a police report, Lastrapes was leaving a bar after having a few drinks. He did not know the man who attacked him, and he did not get a good look at his attacker.
Hours later he was in a hospital bed with 10 stitches on his forehead.
"I couldn't just lay there and be miserable. That would let him win," Lastrapes said. So he focused on his upcoming audition.
Lastrapes said it was his strength that helped him push through and keep his eyes on his future.
"When I was on that stage, the only thing I was thinking about was doing exactly what I rehearsed," Lastrapes said.
Michael Detroit is an associate producer at the Playhouse on the Square
"He got up on stage and he had 90 seconds, and he knocked it out of the park. It was fantastic."
Detroit admired how Lastrapes overcame adversity, yet hates what happened to him.
"Embrace him and say we're sorry this happened. It's not what our city is about," Detroit said.
Lastrapes said he'll find out if he got the part he auditioned for in a few weeks or so.
Lastrapes attacker remains unknown. If you know anything that could help solve the crime, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
