MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man accused of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend will face a judge Monday morning.

Even though James Pool is divorced from Rachel Pool, he can't hide his feelings over her death.

"I want the max," Pool said. "It's a life taken. She deserves it."

The two divorced last year after 13 years of marriage and have two children.

Pool said the marriage broke up after she started seeing the man accused in her death, Donald Dodd. Dodd has been charged with reckless homicide.

Pool communicated with his former wife on the night she died, about visiting the children the next day.

"That night she sent me a text message saying 'goodnight and I love y'all. See you in the morning,' and apparently after that, an hour and a half after that, she was shot," Pool said.

It happened at an apartment complex on Powell Avenue.

"I remember hearing something hit the floor and a shot and I remember telling my roommate I thought it was a gunshot," neighbor Chandler May said.

Donald Dodd initially gave police differing accounts of what happened, saying Rachel Pool committed suicide. In his last statement, Dodd told police he and Pool were alone in the apartment and the gun went off when he tried to take it away from her.

James Pool has a hard time believing that. He said his ex-wife was afraid of guns.

"It's a shock. I want justice. Reckless homicide. I think it's more than reckless homicide."

Donald Dodd is being held on a $200,000 bond.
