MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Former Memphis Mayor A C Wharton is joining ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Wharton will be working with the group on a part-time basis.

ALSAC CEO and President Richard Shadyac released a statement about the hire:

"A C Wharton Jr., former Mayor of Memphis, has joined ALSAC part time to assist our organization in sustaining and building stronger relationships with current and prospective St. Jude supporters in the greater Memphis and key markets across the country, as well as with our multicultural audiences. A C has been a tremendous supporter of St. Jude over the years, and we look forward to his continued contributions to our mission in this role."

Wharton also expressed his excitement to work with ALSAC.

"I am honored to join ALSAC part time and help continue my support of the mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a cause near and dear to my heart. I look forward to helping leverage the connections I have made in Memphis and across the country with people who share my passion for St. Jude and the life-saving research and treatment which benefits children across the U.S. and around the world."

Wharton hinted that he would do something like this when he left office.

"I'll do something that is not only rewarding to me personally but also to the benefit of our citizens," Wharton told Joe Birch during an exit interview in December 2015.

With Wharton joining St. Jude that means the hospital now employs two men who led Memphis for the past several years. Toney Armstrong joined St. Jude after leaving the position of Memphis Police Department Director.
