MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend in 2013.
Shelby County District Attorney's Office said Eric Herbers will spend eight years in prison for his role in Sharon Muir's death.
Investigators said Herbers and Muir decided to take heroin together to celebrate their one-month anniversary.
Muir, who was a student at the University of Memphis at the time, started struggling to breathe. Doctors at the hospital were unable to save her.
After pleading guilty, charges of drug possession and shoplifting were dropped against Herbers.
Herbers was sentenced to eight years in prison. He will be up for parole in 2.4 years.
