MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Police arrested and charged the man they said is responsible for shooting and killing a gas station clerk Thursday.

Police arrested Koalis Peete, 22, and charged him with first-degree murder in the shooting of Abdelshakoor Sider, 20. Sider was working as the clerk at the Citgo station on Cherry Road.

Investigators said Peete entered the gas station wearing a mask and attempted to rob the store. Peete pointed a gun at Sider and the owner.

Police said Sider then grabbed a weapon and shot at Peete, who then returned fire and shot Sider. The store’s owner then grabbed another gun and shot Peete.

Sider and Peete were both taken to Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Sider later died from his injuries. The business owner was not injured.

"Life is very important for everybody. God created us," Abdul Sider, cousin of Abderlshakoor Sider, said.

Abdul's cousin was inside the store, according to police, when the shooting happened.

"He said this is a robbery. I have gun, everybody lay down," Abdul said.

Abdul said the robber, who police have identified as Koalis Peete, has robbed the store previously.

He said Peete came in the store on Thursday and immediately fired a shot into the ground.

"This time he is back again and he needs more than money. He needs anything else," Abdul said.

Abdul said as the gunman held Sider's father at gunpoint, Sider reportedly grabbed a gun. He said both men shot at each other.

"Shoot him in his mouth I think. Black dude shoot him in his chest and body," Abdul said.

When the robber ran outside, Sider's father fired shots at the robber.

Abdul said his cousin was just a hard worker who had dreams.

"He just worked hard. From the store, to the house, to the college," Abdul said.

Officers originally said they were looking for other suspects involved in the shooting and robbery, but they have decided nobody else was involved.

Peete is charged with first-degree murder in perpetration of an armed robbery, aggravated robbery and criminal attempt felony to witness aggravated robbery.

Sider’s family said he was going to school and he aspired to one day become a police officer.
