MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The sun is out, and so are the bikes. In a span of a few hours on Thursday, two Memphis motorcycle riders went down. I just got new information from police about the crashes. Please be careful out there.
The first crash at Winchester Road and Fan Road left a biker in critical condition just before 5. Both the rider and the driver of the car are facing charges. According to a police report, the car pulled out in front of the motorcycle. The bike slammed into the driver's side door of the car. The motorcycle rider is in the hospital in critical condition, the driver also went for minor injures. Police ticketed the car driver for failure to yield, but when the biker is well enough, he'll be arrested for driving without a license or insurance.
Just two hours later, the rider of a sport bike went down at White Station Road and Sanders. Police said the biker took a turn too fast and drove his bike into a car. The biker went to the hospital, but with injuries that didn't appear serious. Police ticketed the motorcycle rider with failure to control his bike. He's also accused of riding without insurance.
Unfortunately, police said the bikers in both of these cases were driving without insurance or otherwise at fault for their accidents. With the sun coming out this week and this weekend in the Mid-South, bikers are getting a case of spring fever and are out hitting the roads. Many of us haven't ridden in a while, and drivers who ignore us any time of the year certainly don't have motorcycles at the top of their minds right now.
So let's all do what we can to keep ourselves safe out there on the roads.
