MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Gunshots rang out behind a Corky's Ribs & BBQ restaurant.
The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. near the drive-thru of the Cordova Corky's located on North Germantown Parkway.
Investigators said a man accidentally shot himself while inside his car. He is in critical condition at this time.
Witnesses said the man, who they identified as a Corky's employee, is expected to be OK.
The drive thru is back open now after the scary sight earlier.
"It's very shocking to hear," Tequilla Shipp said.
Managers at Corky's said the morning was a normal morning until the accidental shooting brought things to a halt at the drive thru.
"A normal Tuesday morning, not much happening. The driveway was just getting ready to open at 10:30," Corky's assistant manager Keith Fisher said.
Jalyn Leakes, 21, works at Corky's BBQ, and was inside his car behind the restaurant when the on duty manager said he accidentally shot himself.
"He stepped out of his car. I guess he was showing a guy that he had a new gun or something and it accidentally went off and shot himself," Fisher said.
Police spent the morning and afternoon trying to piece together how it happened while the back of Corky's and the drive thru area were blocked off as customers began arriving.
"If you own a gun, have it on safety. Make sure it's not pointed to you," Sampson Allea said.
Many people said this shooting is a reminder that everyone needs to be more careful when around guns.
"I'm pretty sure there's some type of safety device that should be on the gun when he has it out like that," Shipp said.
However, those who work with the man who shot himself said he is a good person who made a mistake that could have been a lot worse.
"Great kid, young guy," Fisher said.
It's a mistake that could have cost him his life.
No charges are being filed in the case. Police are calling the shooting accidental.
