2 women robbed at gunpoint in Cooper-Young

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis police need your help tracking down a man who robbed two women at gunpoint in the Cooper Young area.

The reported robbery happened Wednesday night in a church parking lot in the 1000 block of South Cooper Street.

According to police, two women were walking to their car when a man walked up to them and pointed a gun at them. One woman gave up her purse. The other woman also had property stolen from her.

The women, who were not hurt, told police the man then ran south on Cooper towards Southern Avenue.

Oliva Powell is one of the victims.

"We were just happy that we were okay," said Powell.

Powell said she's grateful, yet in shock.

"He put the gun to my face and then asked for my purse," said Powell.

Powell said she and her friend were leaving a bar in Cooper Young when the unknown man ran up behind them.  She said the man threatened to shoot her and kill her if she didn't give him all the money she had.

"To me, it breaks my heart that somebody would feel that they need to do something like that," said Powell.

Powell said it's pretty scary being robbed in Cooper Young.

Crime in and near the Cooper Young area may not be as uncommon as people might think.

According to Memphis Police, within a one-mile radius of Cooper Young there have been 15 reports of robberies in the past three months, as well as 44 burglaries and 17 aggravated assaults.

"Just make sure you're not walking by yourself. I'm glad that I wasn't alone," said Powell.

Powell is also warning people to walk in well-lit areas and be aware of their surroundings.

There's not really a good description of the man who got away.
