Church cancels Ben Carson's scheduled appearance

Church cancels Ben Carson's scheduled appearance

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Presidential candidate Ben Carson will not be speaking at a Memphis church Sunday.

Carson was supposed to be at Highpoint Church on Sunday, February 28 to share his faith with the congregation.

Highpoint Church issued a statement Thursday saying Carson's appearance had been canceled.

The church cited security problems as their reason for canceling the event.

"We worked closely with the incredible people of the Secret Service to develop a plan for this opportunity to hear Dr. Carson's life change story; unfortunately, the security requirements would not allow us to provide an excellent Sunday experience for our partners and guests. We evaluated a variety of options to make this work, however there was no option that allowed us to provide the level of excellence we all expect every Sunday at Highpoint. Therefore, we must regrettably decline this opportunity to hear Dr. Carson's testimony."

However, Carson is still expected to be in Memphis. He has a scheduled noon appearance at Alpha Omega Veterans Services. He'll be touring the facilities and learning about the organization's mission.

Candidates Donald Trump and John Kasich are still scheduled to visit the Mid-South this weekend.

Trump will be at Millington Jet Port on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Kasich will host a town hall at the Holiday Inn at the University of Memphis on Friday at 6 p.m.
