Memphis VA ousts director; cites underperformance

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the Memphis VA Medical Center will have a new director.

The department cited underperformance as the reason behind the switch.

In 2013, Congress launched a congressional investigation into the Memphis VA Medical Center after allegations of inadequate care for three patients who later died.

William "Bill" Mills will serve as acting director for the Memphis WAMC beginning on February 29.

"As a former Tennessean, Bill brings a wealth of operational and administrative experience," VA Midsouth Healthcare Network Director John Patrick said. "He has the right skillset to improve our operations in Memphis and ensure Veterans receive the quality and timely care they deserve."

Congressman Steve Cohen released a statement on the change:

"I would like to thank Dr. Knight for her service to the Memphis VA. I look forward to working with Acting Director Dr. William "Bill" H. Mills and hope that his operational and administrative experience will bring the quality of care that Memphis veterans deserve."
