MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A new group of thieves is targeting a childhood favorite toy—Legos.
The thieves have been spotted across the Memphis area and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office has taken note.
The SCSO released surveillance pictures of the so-called "theft crew."
"I don't know exactly how it's being done, but they're doing it, I guess," Mark Guttensohn said.
Guttensohn owns Bricks and Minifigs on Highway 64, a store that buys and sells new and used Lego products. Some of the sets at the store are priced in the hundreds of dollars.
"There was something in New York where somebody stole a bunch and were caught for it," Guttensohn said. "I mean, in the thousands, but never anything local that I've heard of."
Investigators said the crew has targeted Target stores and have left with over $10,000 worth of Legos since the beginning of the month.
Guttehnson believes they may be selling the stolen Legos online, because many stores like his require identification before buying anything still in the box.
"This is for kids, and for adults that like it. They're kids at heart. So, to see people do this, stealing to sell it; It's disheartening."
If you know where the Lego thieves may be located, call the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
