MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Residents in a Whitehaven apartment complex said crimes that are taking the lives of loved ones need to stop. Crimes, like the one where a man was robbed and shot to death outside his Whitehaven apartment complex early Friday morning, are the type neighbors said are senseless.
Friday, Memphis police responded to a shooting in the 4100 block of Eastwind Drive where they said they found a 25-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound at Hillcrest Apartments.
His family said he and his wife lived in the apartments.
Neighbors said it's an example of how the violence has gotten out of control, and they have a message for those responsible.
"To all of these people, just stop the violence. That's my word to everybody. Just stop the violence because we're tired of waking up to see it everyday." Martha Graham said. "We're tired of mothers going to bed without their sons every night. We're tired of women and men going to prison and stuff."
Investigators said one person entered the apartment and shot the victim multiple times in an attempted robbery. The man died on the scene.
"It's hard. You don't want to go out anywhere at night. Once it gets dark, I usually stay in the house. I don't go out any place. It's just not safe," Graham said.
This is not the only crime that has happened in the area just in this week.
Memphis Police said there was an attempted burglary Thursday in the 4300 block of Eastwind Drive. However, police do not believe the two are connected.
"Even though you can't stop crime from happening, you just got to stay prepared. You got to stay prepared. Anything can happen at any point of time, at any given time," one resident said.
Detectives are still piecing together what happened in the murder of the young man at the apartments. The person responsible remains on the run.
