MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A teenager that may be connected to a robbery died after he was shot in the chest.
Police said a 27-year-old man was sitting in his car on Denison Street near Godwin Park at approximately 1:30 a.m. Three men walked up to him with handguns.
The man then grabbed his gun and a shootout ensued. The 27-year-old said he was shot in the shootout. The suspects ran from the scene.
"Very vague description at this time, just three male subjects," Major Rodney Adair, Memphis Police Department, said. "I think two of the three had on hoods at the time, so the victims were pretty much scrambling for their lives.
Neighbor Tony Harmon said he heard eight gunshots.
"I see the car back up and pull in the house across the street," Harmon said.
The gunmen fired shots at the victim in the car, who in turn fired back. The would-be robbers then sped off.
Just before 2 a.m., a 16-year-old showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound in his chest. He was later pronounced dead. Police said the teenager appears to be connected to the robbery, but they are not certain.
"Why would they put themselves in that position?" Harmon asked. "I mean, it's after midnight. Everybody needs to be at home, somewhere, not in the street."
Harmon said his community is normally quiet.
"I've seen different vehicles come and go," he said. "I never get involved in it."
