BYHALIA, MS (WMC) - A quick look at 5 year-old Jaxon Hamm's picture, his smiling face, and you wouldn't think he had a care in the world, a problem to worry about.
"Ever since he was little he's loved people to call him "Hambone," Cassondra Bundy Sentenn, Jaxon's grandmother, told me, "So we've called him that since he was itty bitty."
But that adorable little smile isn't the only thing in this picture. A closer look reveals bandages and medical tubes.
Jaxon was diagnosed with leukemia on October 23, 2015. Now he's on his third round of chemotherapy. The good news is, he'll be home this weekend. The bad news is he won't be able to attend the big fundraiser for him and his family.
Sentenn tells me doctors warned that he has a compromised immune system and shouldn't be out in public.
"We are very protective of him," she said.
That big fundraiser is Saturday. There's a lot going on and a lot of people are involved. It starts with a motorcycle ride, a poker run to be exact. It will start at the clubhouse for the Windingo Motorcycle club on Blackburn Avenue in Byhalia, MS. There are seven stops. Cars are welcome as well as motorcycles.
Also from noon to 10 p.m., there will be a benefit at the American Legion, with seven bands, a silent auction, food, vendors and more.
"We're motorcyclists and my husband's club (Southern Cross Motorcycle Club) has been very active in fundraisers and they said 'hey we need to do something for the family," Sentenn said. "We could use all the help we can get, and not just monetary. Prayers are always welcome. We could just use a lot of prayers for our little boy."
But money is important. Hambone's mom has had to leave her job to care for him and his dad works in lawn care.
"We can't begin to thank everyone for their support."
