Teen found dead in house fire

HELENA-WEST HELENA, AR (WMC) -

A teenager was found dead in a house fire Friday morning in the 200 block of Westwood in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas. 

Fire officials found 19-year-old Cortney Williams unresponsive on the bedroom floor.

An official cause of death has not been determined, but fire officials believe Williams was overcome from the smoke.

According to Chief of Police Virgil Green, family members were on the scene and were distraught at the news of Williams' death. 

A girlfriend told investigators she left the house around 7:30 a.m. and Williams was lying in the living room.

Fire officials believe the fire started on the stove in the kitchen. They believe it is possible Williams was cooking something and fell asleep at the time of the fire.

The fire was contained to the kitchen area, other parts of the home received heavy smoke damage.

Williams' body has been released to the Phillips County Corner Office. His body will be sent to the Arkansas Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
