MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A college student had to fight off a phone thief at the Wolfchase Starbucks

Rachel Ward said a man tried to steal her phone while she was trying to enjoy some coffee.

"Just out of nowhere, this man came up and corners me by my car and asked to borrow my phone,” Ward said.

Ward said she got out of her car in the Starbucks parking lot. While she did not want to hand her phone over, she offered to dial a number for the man on speakerphone.

"He seemed unsure about the number he was giving me,” she said.

When Ward realized the man might be up to something, he snatched her phone.

"I pulled him to the ground and we wrestled around,” she said.

Ward quickly got her phone back from the thief.

"It made me mad,” she said. “The first emotion I had, I don't know, I started fighting him."

Then, the man grabbed her car keys. As he tried to get away with her car, a Starbucks patrol came over to help scare the man off.

"It's scary because it's so close to home and it is just sad,” Ward said. “If something doesn't feel right, trust it."
