Allegiant Air offers new summer flights from MEM

Allegiant adds two new flights

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Allegiant Air will soon offer Memphis travelers new flight options for summer destination cities.

At the end of May and early June, Allegiant will offer flights to and from Destin, Florida, and Los Angeles, California.

The flight to Destin will take off for the first time on May 27 and will end August 15. The flight to Los Angeles starts June 2 and ends September 18.

The no-frills, low-cost airline will offer tickets as cheap as $59 to Los Angeles and $29 to Destin.

"That's pretty cool. I'd probably definitely go," Harding said.

In addition, the first 22 customers to book each flight will be refunded the cost of their airfare.

Neither Destin nor Los Angeles is a new destination for Memphis International Airport, but the new flights are part of the airport's mission to offer more options at a lower cost to travelers.

However, the cheap flights are not impressing everyone.

Teamsters Union said the cheap prices come at a cost. In a recently released report Teamsters claims the airline has had 98 separate and preventable maintenance issues between September 2015 and January 2016.

Allegiant representative Justin Ralenkotter refused to address the report at a press conference Tuesday.

"I'm really just here to talk about the announcement today," Ralenkotter said.

In an email to WMC Action News 5 a company spokesperson said passengers have no reason to worry:

"The Teamsters currently represent our pilots and have a history of manipulating the media to exert pressure on contract negotiations. It is irresponsible and reckless for the Teamsters to make unfounded claims regarding safety."
