MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - As rain poured late Tuesday night, a Memphis police cruiser crashed into the Memphis College of Art building.
WMC Action News 5 found the wreck on Poplar Avenue between Cooper Street and McLean Boulevard.
The front end of the car was badly damaged.
Police said the officer was driving on Poplar Avenue when he came up to the intersection of Poplar and Tucker Street. He noticed the traffic light was out and went through with caution. That's when he saw another car drive through the intersection without stopping and blew his horn. The cars collided, sending the officer spinning into the College of Art Building.
The other driver told police that she saw the traffic lights were out, stopped at the intersection, then was hit by the cruiser as she tried to drive on Tucker Street.
Witnesses said they didn't see the officer stop at the intersection and hear him blow his horn as he drove through.
The officer was cited for failing to maintain a safe lookout.
No one was seriously injured in the crash.
